The original Aquarius Festival in Nimbin stands as a monument to a major cultural shift in the Northern NSW region. The festival attracted a generation in search of a paradigm shift for a kinder, more sustainable world.
The Nimbin Aquarius Foundation Incorporated was formed in 1993, as an information, ideas and energies exchange network to help facilitate the Aquarius vision.
We collect, collate and display archival material and memorabilia: ie flags, posters,
documents, film and video, stories and poems.
We promote and encourage cultural programmes with the local Bundjalung Nation.
We network with community groups and New Age communities and help with the promotion of cultural events. Every five years we co-ordinate a community celebration of the Aquarius Anniversary.
We seek art funding to encourage youth and other art productions in Nimbin.
A market outreach stall is held each month for fundraising and information dissemination.
We have pioneered “The Nimbin Woodstock Connection”, a collaborative cultural exchange programme with our sister village Woodstock, USA, of ambassadors exchanging and sharing their art and archives.
At the recent 30th Nimbin Aquarius celebrations we were visited by founders of the
Woodstock Museum who shared their story by way of a film festival.
The Nimbin Aquarius Foundation funds a “Mural Restoration Programme” which artists help maintain to keep this unique heritage refreshed in Nimbin. The murals need upgrading on a regular basis (5 to 7 years), to preserve and extend the process.
